- 1862: Anna Leonowens arrives in Siam
(now Thailand) from Singapore with her son Louis.
- 1867: Anna Leonowens departs from Bangkok.
She first goes to Singapore then Ireland where Lois is put in
a boarding school. Anna then moves to America with her daughter
Avis.
- 1868: King Mongkut (Rama IV) passes
away.
- 1870: The English Governess at the
Siamese Court is published in London.
- 1872: The Romance of the Harem,
a book by Anna Leonowens, is published in Boston.
- 1878: Anna Leonowens moves to Halifax
Canada with her daughter and son-in-law.
- 1881: Louis returns to Siam where he
becomes a captain in the king's cavalry. He later goes into the
teak trade and marries the daughter of the British Consul-General.
- 1915: Anna Leonowens dies in Montreal,
Canada.
- 1943: Anna and the King of Siam,
a book by Margaret Landon, is published in New York.
- 1946: Anna and the King of Siam,
a movie starring Irene Dunne and Rex Harrison is released.
- 1952: Siamese Harem Life, a reissue
of The Romance of the Harem, is published in London.
- 1950's: The King and I, a musical
comedy starring Yul Brynner is staged on Broadway.
- 1956: The King and I, a Hollywood
musical comedy based on the stage play and starring Deborah Kerr
and Yul Brynner, is released.
- 1972: A television series of King
and I is broadcast in America.
- 1998: 20th Century Fox announce plans
to film Anna and the King starring Jodie Foster and Chow
Yun Fat.
- 1999: (March): Release of The King
and I, an animated cartoon from Warner Brothers.
