Krabi city and province, in southern Thailand, was the fourth location for the film-makers whilst in Thailand. They went there in early February 1999 to film the marijuana field scene and Khao San Road.

The above photographs show Prachacheun Road on the corner of Maharaj Road in Krabi city. This is the location they transformed into a famous Bangkok road called Khao San Road. This is featured at the start of the book and movie when the character Richard first arrives at the guesthouse. Here he meets the French couple for the first time and the Scotsman Daffy.

Around the corner on Maharat Road you can see this large reclining Buddha which was made out of polystyrene for the movie. The land behind belongs to Keow Gowaram Temple. The monks there were so impressed with this Buddha image that they asked for it to remain on this site after the filming had been completed. The picture to the right shows our students Sakdipat, Nattawud and Suthiphong.

Once the movie is released this Buddha image will surely become another tourist spot. The photograph to the left shows Nattawud sitting in the same position as Leonardo did for the movie (right). How many more people will copy this same pose? For more pictures of this scene, click here.

Around the back you can clearly see that it is a prop for the movie. The number "2542" is the Thai year for 1999. A close-up shows the name of the painter.
