This report is dated October 1999 and it is written and photographed by Beach Film Ltd. We last visited Maya Bay in late August which was mid-monsoon season. In our 2nd Progress Report, we showed that the dune had suffered considerable monsoon damage. The beach was littered with debris which had been washed up and there were large rubbish dumps scattered around the island. However, the pictures over the following pages that we received from Beach Productions Ltd. in October show that a considerable amount of work has already been carried out by the film company and their employees. Although it wasn't their responsibility, they have completely cleared the beach of all rubbish (click here for pictures we took 2 months earlier). They have also repaired fences and done a lot of work to help reverse the damage caused to the dune by the monsoon.

The Dune | The Beach

The Beach Film Ltd: "The production last visited the island on the 8th October. All looks very good. The dunes have re-established well and there is no new wind or wave erosion. There is one fence remaining protecting the north dune as tourists still seem to be trying to climb it. We have also noticed that some of the bamboo stakes have been removed from the dunes by tourists using them to light fires for bbqs. We are in the process of putting up signs to discourage tourists climbing the dunes. The weather seems to have improved and the monsoon is easing off so the number of visitors is increasing. These signs say 'These fences are to protect the fragile dune face system from damage caused by trampling. Please respect the environment and use the stairway provided'. The area behind the dunes that had suffered from wind erosion is now protected by bamboo fencing and this is working well. There is no new erosion and the plants in this area are thriving." - Sarah Clark, Film Publicist.

20th Century Fox sent us a second report at the end of October 1999 after a further storm caused more damage. Click here.
