The following
is a review in Face Magazine (August 1999)
"An aerial
shot through wispy clouds. An idyllic island appears on the horizon.
A tired, dejected voice mutters, "You hope and you dream,
but you never believe that something's going to happen to you."
That voice - it's Leonardo DiCaprio! Then he appears, scooting
through downtown Bankok in the back of a rickshaw, staring wistfully
skywards. He continues, "Man dies, leaves you the mystery
map to the secret island..." More aerial island shots, culminating
in close-up of Stunning French Bird (French actress Virginie
Leydoyen) who tosses her hair and stares into the camera. Eerie
oriental wailing fills the soundtrack and Leo concludes, "And
your life is different. It won't ever be the same again."
There's a brief pause while our hero, in a crisp white vest,
does 1 of his signature turns to the camera then- boom!- the
soundtrack goes into heavy oriental rock crazy. A series of hi-speed
cuts follow. We see Leo shooting out of the water, having a heavy
seesion with Beach Bird, standing on a hill-top practising martial
arts punches, running through the jungle, and dodging a trio
of gun-wielding locals. Then comes the money shot. From several
different angles, we see Leo and an anonymous companion leaping
off a cliff. To their deaths? Cut to black. We get 1 last shot
of Leo cringing with fear, hyperventilating for Thailand. To
black again. The music stops, but Leo's heavy nervy breaths continue.
The words "The Beach" appear, then fade. No mention
of Danny Boyle, The Trainspotting team or Alex Garland. No need." |
